U-haul Permeable Parking Lot Evaluation

Objective

Determine the infiltration and urban heat island mitigation performance of several design variations of a GravelPave2™ at large commercial parking lot in Gilbert, Arizona.

Methodology

Constructed eight hydraulically isolated, 0% slope, sections each containing different designs variations that meet the 100 year 2 hour storm event infiltration requirements. Measure and monitor infiltration rates within the pavement. Measure key energy balance parameters to determine the parking lots urban heat island potential.

Significance

This is the first study of this type in the Southwest US using a permeable parking lot material. The results of this study will help justify the cost and show the benefit of using permeable pavements in new and renovation parking lot projects.
