Cool Roof Energy Study

Objective

Evaluate the economic and environmental performance of a cool roof renovation project of a large commercial facility located in North Phoenix.

Methodology

Monitor roof surface and ceiling temperatures, meteorological information and building energy use data. Develop computer energy model to run simulations to estimate the changes in building energy use. Compare the data collection and modeling results to the actual energy use in the building over several months.

Significance

This is the largest cool roof study conducted to date. The results will be used by local and regional utilities to justify the costs of cool roof systems for new and renovation construction projects.

Duration

Summer and Fall 2008
